Asteroids & Stupidity

breezeshadowApparently I'm posting a lot today; apologies. I just really need to get a rant off of my chest.
I'm FB friends with a chef from the dining hall I worked at while at Cornell. He posts really apeshit things once in a while, and my respect for him was already pretty low. But this latest one... It reminds me of a conversation I had with him when I was still at Cornell.
Apparently he found on iReporter on CNN some report of an asteroid that will hit and obliterate the earth in 2041 or so. Not only did he post this, but he was EXCITED about it. Thrilled. And went into a HUGE array of insults aimed at religious fundamentalists that I won't share here because it's so offensive I can't stand it. He is basically saying that we'll all be so terrified of this asteroid that jihadists and religious shit won't happen anymore. Or reality TV shows.
And I just... Are you SHITTING me. Never mind the outright lack of care about something like this. Including posting EXCITING about something that has me really anxious (I'll be in my 40s-50s in 2041, STILL ALIVE YOU KNOW), he has to be... Outright IGNORANT.
Has he paid attention to history, at all? Because some doomsday scenario would an asteroid would make religious wars and fundamentalism WORSE, not make it vanish. Something like this would be a PERFECT opportunity for someone to go "You know why this is happening? Because we have fallen out of God's grace, and we must REPENT." There'd still be plenty of shit like suicide bombings, assassinations, wars... None of that would change. It'd get WORSE.
People wouldn't just sit around in abject terror. Sure, some of us would. But the violence and fundamentalism and general human asshattery would KEEP ON GOING. No asteroid or other apocalypse is going to change that.
And to be so excited about the world being destroyed? I don't judge anyone who wants the human race to be extinct; hell knows we're a pretty shitty specie a lot of the time. But to be pure GLEEFUL about one unverified story... Fucked up, man. Come on.
The conversation at the dining hall was, no joke, him implying/almost flat out saying that human suffering is the cost of innovation (ex. space travel), and that oh there are human rights violations in China? That's fine, because we may get SPACESHIPS. So seeing his FB status brought me RIGHT back into WTF territory.
So I think I'm just going to hide his posts, possibly unfriend him altogether. I don't have time for this kind of nonsense.
