Biosphere 4: This time, a guy built it in his garage.

Ran across this recently and thought people here might find it interesting. I've been watching a lot of "sealed biosphere" videos on YouTube, recently, where someone takes pond water or dirt and plants and puts them into a terrarium, then never opens the jar. It's kind of interesting to see how species like ostrocods or springtails handle living in isolation.

This is probably the biggest and most complicated set-up I've seen, though. I've got a bit of mixed feelings regarding having a fish or a hermit crab in there... but also he's apparently still going to remove or add species as needed, and they've apparently done well so far.

He's got a website set up about the project, and apparently one day it'll have details about the set-up and live cameras for watching the environments.

No one really believes Donald Trump is going to last. At the rate he's been declining, it would be a minor medical miracle if he survives to the end of his current term.

tl;dr Who wants to live subject to immoral leaders and exploitive self-sabotaging systems? We are capable of better, and we do have collective powers to choose better and deny support to worse. Let's exercise those powers while we still can avert most of worst.

Here we are again, on the threshold of possibility. Happy Public Domain Day! May it be a Happy New Year!

Some years I make a practice of committing to quarterly intentions rather than new year's resolutions. I find it helps me lean into the rhythms specific to each season, and the shorter time frame lends itself to selecting more feasible goals that may yet build to larger ambitions.

In the comments, I encourage you to join me in sharing one or more intentions you have of any size for the first quarter of this year (January, February, March), and what you might do on a daily or weekly basis to nurture them. If you would like to do so privately, all anonymous comments on this post will remain screened unless you explicitly okay otherwise.

Привет and welcome to our new Russian friends from LiveJournal! We are happy to offer you a new home. We will not require identification for you to post or comment. We also do not cooperate with Russian government requests for any information about your account unless they go through a United States court first. (And it hasn't happened in 16 years!)

Importing your journal from ЖЖ may be slow. There are a lot of you, with many posts and comments, and we have to limit how fast we download your information from ЖЖ so they don't block us. Please be patient! We have been watching and fixing errors, and we will go back to doing that after the holiday is over.

I am very sorry that we can't translate the site into Russian or offer support in Russian. We are a much, much smaller company than LiveJournal is, and my high school Russian classes were a very long time ago :) But at least we aren't owned by Sberbank!

Wrote this for the Wanderer's Library's art exchange (I got a picture of a pride of Ethiopian lava cats) and told [personal profile] redsixwing that I'd post it to my journal later. So here it is. It's a little unpolished and the ending is a little blunt, so I might go back later and revise it. I've never written for the Journal of the Walk before, but still enjoyed this.
