Eventually I may post a whole story here, but my brain's been a tad ADD with writing lately.

Shouts, stomps, and singing formed the symphony of the Io streets outside -- it would change as the night went on, but never quite went away. Perhaps on the human side of the city, silence eventually blanketed the world, but the demi side never had a moment to rest. It had taken quite some time to get used to, and Rose May still found that the resulting insomnia would not go away -- but now it was less an aggravation and more background noise, more testimony to why she was there and not with her own species.

All things considered it was a quiet night, and she was spending it staring at paperwork from work, her nightly ritual of trying to make sense out of nonsense, seeking answers for the unexplained. This time, it was a werecat accused of severely mauling a child. Werecats in their animal form were quite large, but the gashes on the poor girl's face matched those of a knife, not claws -- too deep, no tapering off at one end. She also seemed more afraid of her uncle than of the cats they apparently kept parading in front of her. It was a tragic case of family cruelty that they were trying to desperately hide from the public eye by blaming someone else.

One, two, then the third lock on the front door clicked; Rose May looked up from her files as the door opened and Meander stepped through, having to stoop so he did not hit his head on the frame. A fine coating of metal dust covered his clothing, with stray pieces in his hair. Upon seeing her bent over work he smiled softly, shrugging off his jacket, sending glittering debris over the floor.

"Have you been waiting for me?" His tone was half-joking as he walked over and gave her a light kiss on the forehead.

"Maybe." She laughed as she gathered up her paperwork. Even after a year it was a conscious decision rather than a habit: husband came home, then work ended. Too much of her still said no, keep working, solve this case, save this person... But one night would not cause the whole world to collapse. "How was work? Looks like it was busy."

"It was. It's the... Equinox?" Meander tilted his head at her, an old habit that still managed to melt her heart. At her nod, he continued, sitting down across from her at the old round table. "Many people want special gifts. Rare jewels, gold and silver, someone brought in a diamond."

"And you didn't steal it and bring it to me? For shame." They both laughed as Rose May stood up. She put her papers into a small cubby, then walked over to the low-burning furnance and tossed a touch more wood onto it. "So. Children."

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend. My new laptop came in and it is shiny and beautiful, though I may have to change the resolution settings because I am, unfortunately, blind as a bat and this text is a tad too small. I can see it and read it, but my nearsighted/astigmatism combo is making it feel a bit wobbly.

Perhaps I will make some characters in the Sims and share them. I always start fresh with new computers -- growing up my father would have to regularly format my computer's hard drive because old Windows was hilariously unstable, and that computer was just evil anyway. It meant new petz, new everything, and while technology has come along enough for me to fit the entire petz 3 game on my USB, I still start all other games with a clean slate.

Tschuess.
