The leaders speak
Of progress, of advances--
Of the human race.
But whose progress?
Not that of people of
colour, who look up from
the pits into which they
were thrown, a gift from the
perfect white, in the name of
progress. Whose?
Not that of the Natives,
whose dignity is foul,
Outdated, steamrolled
bleached to white
purity. Whose progress?
Not the women's, whose
dignity has been
smothered, controlled
to keep its sinful stench away
from the delicate noses of men.
It is the progress of the white man,
who sits proudly in his throne of
skulls, who takes the victories
from the corpses of heroes,
and repaints it all to match the image
of God.
White-washing history sucks, guys. For some of the many examples:
Rosalind Franklin, whose work with DNA was pretty much stolen by Watson and Crick.
The Atomic Bombings, which were unnecessary on about a million levels, despite what American history books may tell you.
And let's not forget the huge whitewashing of indigenous culture all over the world.
Why I was thinking of this while preparing ramen, I have no idea. I've had a lot of guilt about the society I live in, lately.
Maybe some real writing later.
