Went to a "Shut Up and Write!" meetup for the first time in a very long time, and found it productive -- wrote nearly 2K words in two hours!

Here, have an excerpt:

Rose May woke up to a surprisingly foggy and rainy day. It was still early in the season for the storms to come, and she still had memories of the hot sun on her day off only two days before. No trace remained, and the streets were a mess on her way to work. Carriages skidded on the sleek stones, sending mud spraying up on unfortunate pedestrians. Worse, no one could see more than two meters in front of them; even if someone managed not to slip, they were still just as likely to smack into something or someone unexpected.

The only beast able to handle the mess was the tram, pulling its slow way along the slick rails. Too fast and it would derail and crash; but slow enough, and its weight kept it on the tracks. Rose May would usually not pay the ticket price to go such a short distance, but it was that or get to work muddy and possibly with some cracked bones.

With a sharp whistle, the cars pushed their way away from the station that Rose May had stepped off onto, making its way up the steady Rezten slope toward the upper districts. Rezten was odd in that way; the city ascended steadily until it reached the buff cliffs that separated the city from the ocean. The city’s port was located some kilometers to the southeast, where gryphons and brave goats descended the slightly-smaller cliffs down to the beach. In the city itself, the view from the cliffs was reserved for those who could afford it.

The higher up one went, the more expensive everything became. It was a true high class society.

Life a New Life was located in the lower districts, roughly three or four stations from the city outskirts; Rose May herself lived one station down, in the only affordable government housing that was also considered halfway safe. At two silver, the tram ticket cost more than was ever reasonable for such a short ride, but as she stepped down the platform steps and began her slow walk toward her workplace, she reminded herself that it was worth it, today.

Her long raincoat was soaked and muddy when she pushed open the main doors. Equally-wet coats hung from the racks, and she left her outdoor boots alongside other dirty shoes. A crack of thunder outside muffled to a dull rumble as she shut the main door and walked down the hall in slightly squishy flats.

Rezten was originally based off of Lindblum from Final Fantasy IX, and sometimes it's really hard for me to forget that it is NOT a castle within a castle with magical steampunk flying things. So sometimes I have to worldbuild.

Tschuess.
