Meanwhile, when I'm not PMSing...
"She's really sick, Kader." Tegre looked away then, staring out the window with a frown. "And I just... I know you've been avoiding it, you know. But she needs someone, and well... This is a distant community."
She knew what he was trying to say; even after being married to a woman with the tact of a battering ram, Tegre had somehow still not picked up being direct. He tripped over each polite attempt to be subtle and gentle, and finally Kader just sighed.
"I get it. You want me to see her. I've been out of practice for a few years--"
"I know that doesn't matter with you." He had learned interrupting, though. He looked back at her then, made eye contact for a split-second -- another trait he had picked up. She would have to thank Eilis later, for bringing the man one step closer to human. "I went across a continent and back with you. I know you. You don't forget. Gods, you have a vague memory of your parents..."
Vague indeed: the feeling of being in someone's warm arms, clueless, and then them suddenly resting her suddenly cold, and then leaving -- with not a word.
If they were still alive, and she found whoever owned those arms, she'd be tempted to amputate them, for "medical necessity".
She was running out of excuses. They both knew it. He looked back at her again, and finally she rose. "You know how you say you're a backwater town? I sure as hell hope that doesn't mean you don't have supplies."
Tegre shuffled his feet, and then the saving voice behind him, with a strong yet airy accent: "I bet I could help you make something. Being raised for housewivery means I learned too much about so-called 'folk remedies.'"
Eilis stepped out of the kitchen with a cup of herbal tea in her hand, her dirty blonde hair spilling out of its bun as always. Yet her clothes were impeccable, skin clear, and her icy blue eyes burning into Kader's soul as per usual. Kader would never admit to being intimidated by the woman... More than once a year, at any rate.
"Do you knows which ones are deadly and which ones are solid?" Kader sighed at Eilis' smirk and shrug. "Well I probably will. Grab your bag. If I don't go soon Tegre is going to shuffle himself into a dance routine."
"Oh, so you know about our weekends?" And with the quip, the woman turned and went to retrieve her things.
"Thank you." His voice was so soft she would have missed it, had she not had years of practice listening to it.
"Oh please. You know I'm doing this because I'm damn curious, not just for you." She could not help but smile at Tegre's surprised look. "You know how you say you know me? That works both ways, you seem to forget."
The look of relief spilling over his face kept him from having to say more.
She thought that, after she had sex with someone enough times to bear children with them, she would finally get used to sharing a bed with them. Somehow, her body had not caught up to that. Some days, she still found her husband sleeping with the children, next to their crib, and while he claimed it was for their comfort, she had a feeling it was so she could sleep.
But she suspected it the insomnia that let her smell the smoke and feel the heat, even through the dream.
Rose May woke up slowly from it anyway, then realized with a start that the feelings were real. She sat up quickly then -- and then coughed, roughly, on the air quickly clouding with the smoke. Her heart skipped a beat, then another for good measure, and she shook at Meander frantically.
"Meander. Wake up. Something's wrong--"
He jumped from her hands and sat up in bed in the same instance, shaking off the sleep. Then he coughed, and jumped to his feet, and immediately walked over to pull her out of bed. She tried to shove him away.
"The children, I'll be fine, go get the child--"
"We'll BOTH get them."
He pulled her from the bed as she hacked on the smoke, and led her over to the door. He pressed his hand against it and frowned, but then fatherly instincts completely overroad sense and he pulled it open.
The roof over the hallway was burning. Bits and pieces of it crumbled down and landed inches from their feet. Rose May yelped despite herself and jumped back, but Meander took her tightly.
Nur!
His mental voice spread out like wave from his mind, and within a few seconds she felt her friend stir from a city away, the shock and horror of her emotions rolling back to them.
What the FUCK--
Get Rose to safety. Please. I can get the children. I hoped to get them with her but this is bad.
I could just get all of--
No, save your energy. I do not know what else we may need.
And then Rose May cried out in horror as her husband moved out into the hallway, leaving her behind as he hopped through the embers, slammedopen the door to the children's room. She tried to follow, listening desperately for the cries of her daughters, trying to hear something over the crackling of her house burning...
Then she was outside of it, crumbled in the front yard, coughing up soot and black phlegm. A furry arm wrapped around her and pulled her close, pounding on her back steadily.
"I'm sorry. The kids are alive, so is he. I'll intervene if I need to, naturally."
She knew what Nur was not saying: Meander means business right now, I'll leave him to it.. They all had learned within a few weeks of meeting him that when Meander's mind was turning, leaving him to it was better than trying to figure it out.
Wiping at her eyes, Rose May looked up and whimpered at seeing her house up in flames. The roof had already collapsed over the living room and kitchen, leaving the rest of the structure precariously slanted, seconds from falling in on itself. The house directly next door was already smoldering, but she barely saw it out of the corner of her eyes -- all she saw was everything she owned, burning to ash.
Trying to breathe and hacking instead, she focused frantically on the children's bedroom, where she could see no movement, just smoke and the flicker of flame. She was held down by Nur when she tried to run over and pick the wall apart by hand if she had to to get to her family. She could feel Meander's presence in her mind, steady and strong, but horrifyingly silent. She cried out his name, her children's name, hoping for something--
Then the window shattered with a fast burst of telepathy that left her head pounding along with her heart. Another blast removed the rest of the glass and frame, and Rose May watched completely dumbfounded as Meander managed to climb out of it, while holding two babies, and then completely ruined the image by falling out. With a cry Rose May broke free of the vampire's hold and staggered over, only to cough all over them.
"I am fine, I am fine." Meander uncurled slowly from his ball, revealing the children to be staring too dumbfounded and frightened to cry. Rose May reached out and grabbed Alene at random, hugging her child close, muttering soothing words and doing her best not to cough on her. Meander slowly got to his feet and then, holding Mykhaila, ushered Rose May away from the house--
YOU! Nur suddenly bounced to her feet and charged off, teeth bared and claws drawn, straight past the burning house. Meander pushed Rose May into a run as the rest of the roof suddenly caved, sending embers and wood in all directions. How DARE YOU!
Meander frowned, turning to where Nur had run off. Then he stopped walking, blinking dumbly, arms becoming a bit slack around Mykhaila, who whimpered frantically. Rose May frowned up at him, and turned to see what he saw.
She decided it had to be her watery eyes playing games as Nur threw a bulky, oddly familiar man twenty feet to land hard in the dirt, rolling and cursing. He barely had a chance to get up before Nur leaped and slammed into him, clawing and biting furiously, parrying his punches and kicks. She knew that build, those dark eyes--
I would drink you dry if I didn't think it would make me ILL! Nur bared her fangs and spat poisonous saliva into Tadhg's face...
Little blurbs that came to me. Tegre encouraging Kader to go back to doctoring, and then the rewrite of Rose May and Meander's house being burned down. This time, everyone lives (except maybe Tadhg. He may be sort of screwed if someone doesn't pull Nur off). As for why Meander didn't just have Nur teleport them all out -- that would have been pretty tiring for Nur, and he had a feeling the arsonist could be found by someone dedicated enough to search (Almas, I imagine, is out somewhere, otherwise he'd be helping). Meander, being very focused on getting his wife and kids out of the house, didn't want to divert his attention to it, and unfortunately cannot teleport (if he'd been properly trained in time, he'd be actually be better at it than Nur).
Also: that vampire insult came to me and I just HAD to put it somewhere.
And I'm pretty sure Rose May eventually just breaks down into sobbing because my god, if I saw my house burning, I'd do the same thing.
Sleep time.
Edit - I just realized that Rose May and Meander's twins have the most traumatizing babyhood ever. First their house is burned down, then their city is BOMBED. Those kids are going to have such bad PTSD and barely remember WHY.
Edit Again - I just realized without context this may make Rose May seem like a Helpless Woman (TM). For those unfamiliar with my work: Rose May has asthma during the 1800s. Meander was helping her out and getting her out first because he knew she would collapse and die really fas. He was seriously planning to go with her to get their kids, but when he saw the roof was already going, he decided to get her out and just get some severe burns for the sake of all of them surviving.
The NEXT time their house is on fire (... Yes, it happens again. See "traumatizing babyhood for twins"), Rose May gets to the kids faster than Meander. Basically: Meander and Rose May are both BAMFs who will never, ever sleep the night again. >.>
Tschuess.
